This cozy backyard patio is the perfect spot to relax and unwind while taking in gorgeous views in a secluded spot.  Creating a landscaping bed that borders pavement is a great way to add dimension as well as providing color and design.  This collection mixes hues of pinks, purples yellows and greens to create a lovely display using geranium, million bells, dianthus, mexican sage and abelia.

Moving along to the other side of the patio is a gorgeous pergola with climbing vines of wisteria.  We’ve lined the perimeter of the pergola with boxwood plants and abelia.  Then we lined the walkway that leads out of the yard with lire and loropetalum plants.

Below is a diagram that lists out which plant is which so you can recreate this look in your own backyard.  If you are interested in having Landscape Systems install a bed, build a patio, create a pergola or covered space or any other outdoor need give us a call.    We can wait to help transform your space.

We love tackling landscape jobs on new home builds.  Starting with that blank slate allows us the opportunity to give the client their vision.  This back yard project was on a modern home that wanted clean simple lines to coordinate with the house’s design aesthetic.

In this bed we planted a Rising Sun Red Bud tree to the far left that will grow to be about 12-15 feet in height.  Centered is a tall planter that’s filled with Hibiscus for height, anchored by red Geraniums and filled in with Million Bell flowers and hanging Ivy.  The ground covering we used a Lemon Sedum plant, and behind those are Carissa Holly shrubs.

In this picture, the tree that hides the gray wall box is a Sunshine Ligustrum.

In this particularly project we were excited to bring in a favorite vendor that we love working alongside.  Jeff Kern Designs installs artificial turf as an alternative to grass which carried out the modernity for this home even further.

On the other side of their yard we built a similar bed and added in Magnolia trees that will grow in height to create a screen from their neighbor’s yard.  We continued over with Lemon Sedum, Carissa Holly shrubs, geraniums and Sunshine Ligustrum.

For added decoration we filtered boulders within the bed.

These cheery yellow flowers sprinkled in are Gaillardia, a genus of flowering plants in the sunflower family.  This perennial has a long season of bloom, and is used as a blanket flower.  The daisy-like flowers are produced from early summer to early fall in shades of orange, red and yellow, adding sizzle to the garden and attracting nectar-seeking butterflies.

This week we are featuring another gorgeous home that truly understands the impact of curb appeal.  From the moment you pull up to this stunning entry you are greeted with beautiful color, perfectly manicured bushes and an array of trees that really round out the overall landscape.  A truly great landscape is one that spans the entire property’s perimeter, uses symmetrically and keeps the eye engaged on every sight level.  Enjoy scrolling through all of the images, most of the plants have been identified, but if you have any questions about any items seen give us a call or email, or come over to our Facebook page and leave a message or post.

Starting with the orange zinnia flowers you’ve already been greeted by a cheerful and bright seasonal flower.  As you continue to walk you brush by the well trimmed Shrubs, “Carissa Holly.”  If you are a resident in the DFW metroplex you know the beauty that comes with a  Crepe Myrtle tree, and soon those trees will be filled with color and brighten up the yard even more.

This gorgeous entryway continues with Carissa holly bushes, stepping down are the salvia (sage) bright purple hues. The tree to the left of the door is a dogwood, and to the right is a Yaupon Holly tree, then on the far right is a Savannah Holly tree.  The planter containers have a simple booster ferns inside.

The far left of the property line carries some of the same plants and colors.  The yucca grass to the far left, Salvia sage again, boxwood bushes and Wisteria hanging from the arbor.

This lovely little bed features  the same Purple salvia (sage), as well as a white flower, the shasta daisy.

Spring is one of our favorite seasons, the warm weather gets everyone motivated to clean out their flower beds and spruce up their yards in preparation for months of being outdoors.  One of our clients loves spring just as much as us because it is the season his perennials bloom in full display and create a gorgeous backdrop for plenty of outdoor fun.  This yard is covered in colorful dianthus, which we planted a few years ago, and on cue comes back better and better every year.  The vibrant pinks and purples not only are a stunning display, but when our typical Texas spring brings the wind they seem to dance around instead of being tossed about.  What we love about this yard is the layering.  We’ve been able to layer every aspect of this yard, both front and back, with symmetrical plants, shrubs and color.  Some of the stand outs are the pink azaleas scattered throughout as well as the vibrant yellow Lemon Ligustrum and the annual pansies in the planters for extra pops of color.  We will let this home speak for itself, enjoy the photos and if you are interested in hiring us for your landscape design please give us a call or fill out the contact form to the right.

Moving right along sharing more from one of our favorite landscape installations properties, we shared with you the front yard of this stunning Fort Worth home a couple of weeks ago, and now it’s time to highlight their backyard as well.  First of all, can you say garden with a view!  If I lived here you bet you’d find me sitting in that glider staring out at the water taking in my surroundings.  For a space like this, which is long and a little narrow, it was super important to create varying heights and landscape levels to maximum the space.

Dwarf mondo keeps a nice clean border along the house and in the raised beds. It’s an evergreen you rarely have to trim and it keeps soil from washing onto your hardscape.  Then we also have a spiral boxwood centerpiece to add, which is very  low maintenance.  For an added bit of color we also planted caladiums and some periwinkle annuals that will stay until the first frost.

At the very end of the raised bed, we planted azalea bushes, which produce a beautiful pink flower multiple times throughout the year.

One more bed at the edge of the property completes the look and creates a clear dividing line between their house and their neighbors’.

This fountain water feature adds an artist element to the grass accent bed.  We sell a variety of these fountains in the garden shop.

You know we love a good hibiscus, especially in pots, and they look great next to the seated glider that overlooks the lake.

Did you know we do hardscape as well as landscaping?  Here we built a travertine patio to extend their patio, providing a more elegant walkway and more space for another seating and dining area.

Here you can also see the stone retaining wall we built with a leuders cap on top. We then built stairs leading up to their patio to give the space multi levels.  Prior to our design, the home had a Dorr flagstone that wasn’t a great quality for the stature of the home.

We also brought in the Plant hanger to the far left, a spagnjm moss succulent planter (also sold in the nursery). These ready container garden holds moisture in way better than the standard plastic bucket hangers.  For a fun and colorful added touch, the pink flamingo (also from our home decor shop) really adds a pop.

And what patio would be complete without carrying the plant life up to the seating area in an array of pots and planters.

Southlake Landscaping Design Garden Nursery

We love putting spiral boxwoods in potters to create height and a focal point that’s very low maintenance.

You know how we feel about live edge furniture!  If you haven’t seen this post, or checked out the many designs we have at the nursery you are missing out.  This coffee table came from our decor shop and really fits beautifully with the modern rustic space.  We have a couple more of these at the shop, just waiting to complete your space.

And we can never forget the side of the house, that leads from the front to the back.  With those areas being so stunning, the walk into the backyard has to be just as beautiful so it all flows.  To the left, Tree Form Savannah’s soften up the wall without covering up the stone work, which is such a beautiful detail to the home.   To the right, an Evergreen screen creates a privacy wall and blocks the view of the neighbor’s house without takkng up space in the yard.

And what home wouldn’t love to have a garden greenhouse of their own.  We added the finishing touches to this shed by using reclaimed wood to give it unique detailing.  The evergreens to each side frame the house and really show that every inch of this yard has been carefully thought out.

We are sharing another awesome client landscape remodel today!  I wish we had some more “before” shots to show you, because this one needed a lot of work, but you can get the idea from the one we do have.  When we pulled up to this gorgeous home, (in an amazing neighborhood) we couldn’t believe this is how bare the landscaping was.  The owners had just purchased the home, and for as stunning as the home was, it needed a landscape that matched it.  What it did have going for it, was the blank slate it provided, with little issues standing in our way of making it stand out.

First, although it was an interesting design choice, we felt a straightforward walkway was a better option with the lines and symmetry of the home.  The owners also decided to add an iron gate to create a small porch area where they could put a table and chairs while still having a little bit of privacy behind the planters.

To create the front beds that line the gate we used Mountain Laurel trees, Savannah Holly trees, twist of lime abelia, azaleas, love pedlums, baby gem boxwoods, liriope plants, althea trees, and dwarf golden yews.

We also added a set of window boxes to the upper balconies, to draw your eye up and extend the eye line of the greenery.   They can replace these annuals with each new season.  Right now they have Esperanza in them.

These sunshine ligustrum add a fun pop to break up the basic greens, and the oak leaf holly add height to provide variation to the bed.

These two pots sit at each side of the porch, creating a show stopping piece that can be filled each season with beautiful annuals. We like to create a couple of spaces in most of our landscape installs where this is possible, so you can update the colors each season, and always have something blooming year round.  This particular combination has hibiscus as the height, vincas, scaevola, and periwinkle mixed throughout.

We have another annual bed at the curb, as the entrance to the walkway, where we can plant coordinating color that will mirror what’s in the potters.  It’s a great way to tie all of the color together for a cohesive look.   This plant grouping is made up of periwinkle, ixora plant, kaleidoscope abelia, pentas.  Finally, lining the walkway is a layer of liriope plant on both sides.

We like to utilize the entire property when we are landscaping both the front and back yards, but more so in the front, so you create a giant frame for your home, showcasing it’s size and utilizing all your landscape has to offer.  Here we’ve created a bed that creates a full border from the neighbor’s and also hides an unsightly power box.  We used a Japanese maple tree, a holly tree, an althea tree.  The lower ground bushes are azaleas, and finally edged with liriope plants and a small pop of annuals for color.

We extended the bordering beds all the way to the garage and fence leading you to the back yard, as well as flanking the garage door with potters selling with sweet potato vines and hibiscus.  We topped off the right bed with holly trees and more sunshine ligustrum.
